Set in ancient Rome, this Gladiator themed chess set will be most interesting to use! One of history's cruelest and most exciting organized battles, the gladiator games of Rome had calm beginnings in which the gladiator's were never actually killed, but merely 'defeated' in mock battles. The 'battles' quickly changed though, and became one of the mainstays of the Roman Republic before the Empire eventually fell.

As popularized in the recent film, "Gladiator", a victorious Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridias was named 'keeper of Rome', and meant to succeed the dying emperor Marcus Aurelius. However, the emperor's son Commodus becomes involved and condemns Maximus to the life of a gladiator slave. Maximus' rise through the ranks of the gladiators and finally the confronting of his enemy mount and climax the plot of the film, and give a good look at the life of gladiators and ancient times.

This set has the Roman red and silver forces, the supporters of the gladiator 'games', well outfitted and fit for their duties. In opposition is the gladiator army in green, with various gladiators and even a few lions composing the ranks!
