Functional. Yes, this chess box is not the Lexus. It's more like a downright functional Honda. Well, maybe it looks nice too. At least in the photo. No really, the box is good, but we give it both a thumbs up and a thumbs down. A thumbs up for price, and a thumbs down because it's just nothing like the Drueke box which you can show off. But at least we think it's priced right and you'll protect your set of pieces. Why else do you need a box anyway? I mean if it's for display, you'd keep the pieces outside the box and show THEM off... right?

If you don't like the center divider, you can pull it right out (it might fall out without you trying anyway). So I thought I'd try to make it sound like a feature rather than a flaw.

A good value in a low-cost box December 11, 2007

I just received this box (ordered using a half-off discount) and consider it a good value for the money. It was well packed and arrived on time in an inner box marked, 'The UK's Premier Chess Supplier', 'Hardwood Mahogany Chess Box', and '(Storage Capacity  106mm King)'.

This box easily holds a set of Executive Staunton chess pieces (3.9 in. king, two queens per side). And, the wood and brass parts are fine.  However, there are two areas that need work.

First, the green felt covered cardboard on the inner sides was glued in place using too little and too weak glue, so the felt liners separate from the wood walls. (You can just about see this in the stock photo.)

Second, the box has very thin stick on pads for feet, about 0.003 inch thick.

If you don't mind or can fix these drawbacks, you get a very serviceable wood box.  And, at half off, a bit of a bargain.
