Mephisto Expert Travel Chess Computer features a slim, smooth design that seems to fit anywhere. 1/2 inch tall peg style plastic pieces lightly snug into each square without the loose wobbly feel of some peg chess sets. The pieces stay in place and can be stored on the chessboard even with the latching lid closed. Captured pieces are placed in holes next to the chess board. Clear LCD display and easy to understand button interface as well as a compact, practical design and extensive levels place this computer at the top among portable chess computers. Beginner levels all retrict the computer's search depth in different ways, resulting in weaker play and giving you the chance to learn more about the game and perhaps beat the computer occasionally. Normal, Training, or Tournament Levels are perfect for the intermediate to advanced player. Normal Levels range from easy all the way up to a difficult 10-minute response time, and the Tournament Levels are extremely challenging. And don't forget to try the Blitz Levels for some fast and exciting games of Speed Chess. By the way, for Tournament and Blitz Games, you can activate the built-in Bronstein Clock. Want to experiment? Use the Mate Search Levels to solve problems up to mate in eight - try searching from a position in one of your own games, or set up an actual mate problem. Choose the Infinite Level to have the computer analyze complicated positions for hours or even days!

Great portable chess computer April 29, 2008

First of all, the lid hinges are spring loaded and you can easily remove the lid by pulling out on the hinges while the lid is open.  The computer is well featured.  It has many (64) levels of play.  I use it with setups from texts all the time; it is very easy to set up custom plays.  I recommend this unit.

I have had this chess computer for over a year, and it suits my needs very well. It is easily portable, and plays well enough for my level of play (I would probably best be described as a very strong beginner).  There are many playing levels available and it runs for a long time on a set of batteries. I added a piece of foam to the inside of the upper lid to help keep the pieces in place during travel. Excellent value for the money.

I continue to enjoy the Mephisto travel computer very much.  It's exactly what I was looking for in terms of playing strength, flexible options, and portability.  I particularly like the AA battery power, since these batteries are cheaply available everywhere.  I've been using the unit every day for a for a couple of weeks, and the original set of batteries is still going strong.
