About this product

A Russian grandmaster, David Bronstein was one of the strongest players in the world for about a decade, beginning in 1948. His games consistently demonstrated a high degree of creativity, fantasy and tactical ingenuity, and Bronstein's talent for springing the unexpected on his opponents. In this humorous, delightfully written book, he tries to show "that quite a large number of similar games are in fact different in the way they have been created in the minds of the players. And although they are different, all of these games, with their identical first move, still retain for a considerable time traces of one and the same inherited pattern.

The first move referred to is the popular king's pawn opening (favored by Bobby Fischer, among others), but instead of conventional move-by -move analysis, Bronstein here presents the moves for each game in full, with a wealth of illustrative diagrams. In lively, frequently amusing commentary and analysis he emphasizes the ideas behind the moves, offering insight into the way in which 1P-K4--P-K4 imposes its patterns on the subsequent game for a considerable time. The result is a chess classic, one that will give players at all levels a chance to see one of the game's most fertile, inventive minds at work and a host of the brilliant and provocative games that resulted.
