About this product hands on review

This set is great for any traveling analyst! A tough plastic case, and metal playing surface make it basically indestructible. Not only are the 3d pieces highly magnetic, but they are also short enough to fit under the lid while still saving the position. Give it a shake and they are still in position.... strong magnets!

Specifications:
  • Board size: 1" tall, 8" square.
  • Set weight: 15.2oz.

Great set, but pieces could be more distinctive April 16, 2008
Reviewer: Zaine Ridling from Rolla, Missouri
As others have noted, at first, it's difficult to distinguish between pawns and bishops (the bishops have larger bases). The quality of the board is very high, its gold and black glossy metallic finish is easy on the eyes. This Drueke set has reluctantly become my favorite over those "dime-sized flat disc" sets I've used and enjoyed for years. The pieces are easy to move and the magnets are good. You can even repair the pieces easily; how many sets can you say that about!

Drueke designed it with a pop-top cover, which is purposefully low-tech. If you're going to use this set for 20+ years and trust me, it will last even longer, then the first thing to go would be plastic hinges on the cover. It's easy to carry and ChessHouse.com offers the best price, bar none.

Drueke Magnetic Review November 11, 2006
Reviewer: Sterling from Mount Vernon, WA United States
A good magnetic.  Detail is good, but small.  Small not a problem but you have to get used to telling bishops from pawns (piece bases are bigger).  Heavy duty lid is a plus & white set is ivory.  Improvements?... algebraic notation and a better finish of pieces (remedied with a hobby knife to remove the burrs).  Another nagging bit is the magnet which isn't glued & wants to remain on board when piece picked up, but that can be cured with a little glue.  Piece base is the size of square which means a  tight fit.  The quality receives a "fair".  They had screened the squares over a long scratch on base which should've been caught.  Surprising to see as Drueke has such a reputation for quality.  Overall, a nice board to play and recommended to all who really want a decent magnetic and hate those pegs or flat, dime-sized pieces (smile).

Tough Portable chess set September 22, 2006
Reviewer: Jeff from Hawaii
I bought this tough portable chess set before I deployed to Iraq in 2003; I carried this set with me wherever I went. This gave me a great opportunity to wind down at the end of the day with a fellow Soldier or Marine over a quick game.

Magnetic Chess May 1, 2006

The one and only greatest chess set to own besides a formal gorgeous wooden set. I have used on the train, in the car, beach - everywhere you may feel like practicing combos, openings, and generally ignoring everything else. For the true chess addict and practitioner!!!

Jim Pash May 1, 2006

I've owned this set for over 20 years and it is still a marvel. The pieces themselves are fascinating to look at and a Drueke original, though with a Staunton style. The board size is perfect. My only complaint is that the cover has no hinge or means of securing. I may purchase another one soon since my board finish is wearing out. Sliding the pieces across the board makes them feel weighted! I wish Drueke would make a larger set of this style, say 2 1/2 or 3-ish. The chisled lines and the points on the pedestal have never been explored enough for me. I consider it a new concept in Staunton designs. This is probably due to turning wood on a lathe. But quality plastic, weighted and felted (or magnetic) makes many more concepts possible. Drueke has proved it.
