Marble Chess Set

Marble chess sets are great to dress up a room with. A marble chess set also make a great decorative gift. Marble chess sets aren't used to play chess with as often, they however make great conversational pieces, and they are good for a casual game of chess. Because they are a marble, (marble is stone) you don't want to be hard on them, marble has a tendency to chip or crack if at all misused.

Native American Theme Chess Set Pieces

These Native American Theme Chess Set Pieces depict the woodland Indians VS the plains Indians. The Kings for both sides are powerful tribal chiefs, and the queens are the chiefs wife. The Bishops in the Native American theme chess set are the tribal medicine men. I'm Guessing that this chess set represents pre-colonized America because neither tribe has horses for the knights. The Native American peoples had no horses until after America was Colonized, horses revolutionized the Indian.
The Rook for the plains Indians in this theme chess set is a tepee and for the woodland Indians is a wooden hutch. The pawns are the young men of the tribes known as braves, both sides of pawns are in their respective dress and also wearing war paint.

See for yourself the great detail of this Indian theme chess set.

Wood Chess Set Pieces

This is one of my favorite wood chess sets, the bold lines, and strong looking design of each piece give this wood chess set a very manly look. These pieces are very heavy, they are weighted with lead, and have leather coverings on the bases. I like the leather coverings better than the plain felt cover that most chess pieces have on them.
The knights especially are good looking, and that is generally the case with most wood chess sets. The knights tend to attract the most artistic interest, but even more so with this wooden chess set. The maker of this chess set has done a great job.

Weighted Plastic Chess Set Pieces

playing with weighted chess pieces is way better than with un-weighted chess pieces, the weighted chess set just feels better. This is a very reasonably priced Weighted Chess Set, it comes with extra queens and it is designed after the same chess set that they use in scholastic chess tournaments. In fact many schools have started using this chess set in their tournaments and personal chess clubs.
Being weighted also makes this chess set better for speed chess, because the heavy chess pieces are not as easily knocked over. The color of the black side is jet black, and the white side of this weighted chess set is more of a ivory white. The king stands 3 3/4" high, the standard height for tournament chess sets.

Travel Chess and Checker Set

Comes with a custom fit carry case, this travel chess and checker set is a good choice for portable entertainment. I am well known for bringing a travel chess set with me and playing chess in restaurants while I wait for my food, it's a great way to pass the time.
The chess board folds compactly in half, when it's set up it has a perfectly flat surface, thats not always the case with folding chess boards. Inside the carry case there is compartments that keep things nicely organized for the next chess game.

Travel Chess Set

This Wood Travel Chess Set is extremely good looking, it is a travel chess set that you might expect to really pay out for. The wood quality and the magnetic chess pieces combine to make a really nice travel chess set.
This travel chess set is also great for analysis to, the border of the chess board is algebraically notated. It's great to use on a long flight or road trip with a chess puzzle book and work out mate in 3's and other chess puzzles. And it is hinged, this wood travel chess set folds in half and closes with a little golden clasp. The magnetic chess pieces store neatly inside in their own little slots made of felt. Because it's magnetic, has algebraic notation and its easily stored into a backpack or purse, it makes the perfect travel chess set.

Giant Checker Set

Rolly Toys also makes a giant checker set. This giant checker set uses the same 9 foot square chess board that the giant chess set uses. Like the giant chess set, the giant checker set is all weather, durable enough to withstand almost anything the elements can throw at them.
Each giant checker piece has a 1" sealed hole through the middle. The giant checker set comes with metal rods that are able to hold two checkers, one on top of the other, that really comes in handy for when you get a checker crowned. And one of the really nice things about those metal rods, is that the rod extends a good 5" out of the holes in the middle of each checker piece, making a good handle to move around the kings.
In a nutshell i'd say this is the best giant checker set I have ever played with, and the giant checker pieces are super strong and durable.

Theme Chess Set, Celtic

The Celtic theme chess set pieces are designed after the old Celts. This theme chess set is det in about 1014 AD. The Celtic chess set is very accurate as to dress and weapons. The Celts were known for their large heavy weapnons, and their lightly clad, agile footman. The Celts were the masters of hit and run.
Playing the dark side of the theme chess set is the sea raiding Norseman, otherwise known as Vikings. The Vikings were most well know for raiding the shores of europe, most notably Ireland, France, England and Italy. These raiders were known as The Sea Wolves, no one knew where they would strike next. Great detail and the costumes and figures are historically accurate, this is a really stimulating theme battle chess set!

Saitek Digital Chess Timer

Saitek is producing a new chess timer called the Saitek Competition Game Clock. This digital chess timer is very classy looking. This new Saitek chess timer has loads of modesw and features. One of the great things about this new digital chess timer is that the LCD screen's are seperated, that elimenates a lot of confusion during a chess game and just looks more orderly. Another cool thing about Saiteks new chess timer is that it doesn't cost to much, you almost never see a digital chess clock going for as little as the new Saitek chess timer, it only costs $26.95! I personally don't think that price will last much longer.

Gladiator Theme Chess Set

I would tend to think that this Gladiator theme chess set is a depiction of the Spartacus gladiator rebellion against Rome (others think differently). If you look closely you can see its Rome VS the Gladiators. all the heavy Roman infantry VS the lightly clad, agile gladiators. No other event in history that I can think of looks more like this scene.
But anyway, down to the description of the Gladiator chess set. All the Gladiators are lightly clad in cloth tunics, the pawns bearing sheilds. The Romans are heavily clad in armor, their pawns look like an impenetrable wall of steel, their bishops are Roman diplomats, the knights are astride of a rearing steed. The king is also heavily clad in armor, a sight not often seen in Roman theme chess sets.
Whatever your historical opinion may be, I would agree that this chess set is pretty good looking (if it wasn't I would not even write about it).

Computer Chess Software

If someone were to ask me what computer chess software I would recommend, I would answer them, "what level of chess do you play?" What level of chess you play now, and your current chess comprehension level will determine the answer to the question "What computer chess software would you recommend".

Computer Chess Software For Beginner's
For the adults and kids I would recommend the Tasc Chess CD II. The Tasc Chess computer software is the most direct and to the point chess leaning software I have seen yet! It is very basic, yet it gets the job done, by the time you finnish the program you will be out of the beginner chess player stage! Read More Statistics on Tasc II.

Chess Computer Software For Intermediate Players.
Usually when chess players get to the intermediate stage, they want to focus more on memorizing complex chess openings. Chess opening are important to the game of chess, but what is far more important is your general understanding of chess tactics. Chess tactics and theory is what will really win the day for you in a game of chess. And just as importand is your endgame, losing with a material advantage in the endgame always hurts. But there is a way to brush up on all three area's, chess opening's, tactics, and endgames. It's called Total Chess Training. Total Chess Training is computer chess software that hones all tree above mentioned chess skills. Total Chess Training is package of several chess programs, that was put together for the chess player or club player that is looking to improve his chess skills out of the intermediate stage. Read More Statistics On Total Chess Training.

Chess Computer Software For Intermediate and above!
Fritz 10 is a great live chess program that is produced by Chess Base. Fritz 10 is an interactive chess software that is really more fun than it is improving your chess skills. But that's not to say that it does nothing for you. If you use the tool that they give you with Fritz 10, you are bound to learn a lot. But what most people buy Fritz 10 for (and all the Fritz Software) is the online interactive part of chess. Owning Fritz 10 chess computer software unlocks a whole new chess world, you get your own profile to build online, and there are many Grandmasters that play using Fritz 10. Fritz 10 is used on PlayChess.com, the online chess gaming site for Chess Base. Read More Statistics On Fritz 10.

Chess For Dummies

You know that For Dummies book series? They made one for chess! It's Chess For Dummies. Written by James Eade (not a dummy he's a chess master). James Eade does a fine job with Chess For Dummies, he lays out all the rules in easy english, not chess gibberish that you see in most chess books. And at the same time he explains exactly what certain chess terms you hear and can't figure out without asking a stupid question! In Chess For Dummies you learn,
  1. How each chess piece moves
  2. The powers of each piece
  3. Algebraic chess notation
  4. Some chess tactics
  5. And even shows you how to get involved in chess clubs and tournaments.

James Eade has written several chess books, he is a known and popular chess writer, with many pertinent chess books, all designed to improve your chess. Chess For Dummies is another great For Dummies book, and hey after you read it, you won't be!

Chess Table Review

Playing chess on a chess table is a different experience if you have never actually done it. Having a table that is designated for chess sitting by the fireplace is very inviting. It's very relaxing to sit down by your chess table in the evening with a friend or family member and just play chess, a great way to kick back and play casual chess.
Here is a link to a few chess tables including the one pictured below.

Digital Chess Timer

The Excalibur digital chess timer is the most well know digital chess clock. You see the Excalibur chess timer most often in scholastic chess tournaments. The extreme affordability, accuracy, and reliability, have made it the clock of choice. The Excalibur chess timer is the only chess clock that is officially sanctioned by the USCF (United States Chess Federation).
It features a large LCD digital screen, all the modern delay modes are available with the Excalibur chess timer, the proven accuracy of the Excaliber chess timer is the best part of owning a digital chess timer.
But for a really nice chess timer, like one you would take to the coffee shop, you would want to get something with better looks, and with quieter buttons.

The Chronos digital chess timer is, in my opinion the best chess clock ever made. The Chronos digital chess timer comes in 2 body styles, one is the Chronos Blitz digital chess timer, which is smaller. And the other is the Chronos digital chess timer, larger than the Blitz Chronos chess clock. Then there are 2 button styles, there is the classic Chronos chess timer buttons, and then there is the touch sensor button. The Chronos Blitz and the regular Chronos chess timer come with either button styles. The touch style button is extremely nice, it makes absolutely no noise when you touch the button
The Chronos Blitz digital chess timer comes pre-programmed speed chess modes already on it, and it is a better travel chess timer. The larger, original Chronos chess timer is programmed for classical chess. But both chess timers are fully programmable to suit your needs, it is super simple to operate once you get the hang of it, there are only three buttons on the both Chronos chess timers.
And I have yet to get to the best part of this chess timer, the Chronos chess timer has got battle proven armor. That's right, the casing on the Chronos digital chess timer is one piece construction steel plate. I have seen a chronos chess clock after it has be run over by a truck, it was slightly squashed, But the clock still worked the same! There is no other chess clock I know of that could even come close to that tough!
Here is a helpful free video guide on how to operate and program the Chronos Digital Chess Timer

Travel Chess Computer: Finding the right one

When you have a long road trip or flight ahead, there is nothing like a travel chess computer to whittle away the time. Regardless of road trips and flights, it can take a lot to occupy an active child's mind. It can take a lot to occupy an active child's mind, but the very best way to do that is to give children something that will educate them rather than dumb them down like a Nintendo Gameboy.
That's where travel chess computers fit the bill perfectly, face it, chess is a game that takes all the mental facilities, and chess really requires a lot of focus and concentration. Travel chess computers are the perfect substitution for the new Nintendo games that do nothing to improve your IQ, rather than improve I tend to think that they turn kids into vegetables!

So we know that Nintendo is a no go, and that travel chess computers are great to substitute for a Nintendo. But then a question quickly arises. Which travel chess computer should I buy?
A good question, I will do my best to advise you, And I have used each and every one of the chess computers I am going to mention.

First we need to find what your price range is for a travel chess computer. I will start with the cheaper chess computers and I will move on to the more expensive but better chess computer.

Chess Station Travel Chess Computer:
First of all this is the very cheapest chess computer I would ever recommend that you ever buy! The
Chess Station travel chess computer is great because it offers versatility that other chess computers don't. The best part about this travel chess computer is that you get a handheld, portable chess computer unit, and you also get an electronic chess board as well! This enables you to carry the handheld chess unit anywhere you want without pieces and be able to play chess. But then if you want to play with a real chess board with real chess pieces, rather than the LCD screen that the handheld travel unit, you can just plug the handheld unit into the chess board. Then the Chess Station travel chess computer becomes an electronic chess set! Fairly powerful and easy to use, with many fun options, this travel chess computer is pretty nice and for a great deal. You are able to play VS the computer or another human. The LCD screen on this travel chess computer however is not as detailed as others. Chess Station travel chess computer is made by Excalibur Electronics.

Deluxe Talking Travel Chess Computer:
This
Talking travel chess computer is an extremely nice chess computer, and great for kids to use. The talking feature of the Talking travel chess computer is very handy for kids and eliminates a lot of confusion that could ensue without it (the talking mode is optional). The Talking travel chess computer tells you when you are in check, if you are trying to make an illegal move, this travel chess unit makes a lot of sense. And the LCD screen is the second best I have seen on a LCD travel chess computer that I have seen in this price range. The Deluxe travel chess computer is operated with a stylus, this stylus makes the Deluxe travel chess computer super simple to operate the entire unit. This travel chess computer is also super simple to put on player VS player mode instead of player VS computer. Also there are several adjustable playing levels to this travel chess computer, and it can be turned up to an extremely high level and is far to hard for me to beat!

Maestro Travel Chess Computer:
The
Maestro travel chess computer has the best LCD screen ever for it's class of chess computer, each chess piece is easily distinguished. As for playing power it is about the same as the Deluxe travel chess computer. It does not talk, but it offers anther feature that is just as nice, or nicer for adults. The LCD screen has an optional backlight, so you are able to play in any lighting, anytime! (watch out for kids playing in the dead of night!) You can set up chess puzzle positions with the Maestro travel chess computer as well. This is a great feature, it enables you to work through a chess puzzle book and let the computer play as the opposing side and make the forced mate in 3 moves for you! (the Deluxe travel chess computer can do this as well).

*New* Mon Roi chess computer:
The Mon Roi chess computer is the ultimate of all travel chess computer. It is a personal chess computer that can even be password protected. You can automatically save all your chess games in it's database, and later upload them to a computer for further analysis using a USB cable! This new little chess gadget is the most high tech piece of chess equipment available!
Mon Roi chess tournaments are hosted and all the games from these tournaments are veiwable online. These tournaments are hosted, and the players games are all picked up by a wireless gadget and are automatically able to be seen online! This new chess technology is available to buy, but it is expensive, and I would only recommend it to the most avid of chess players!

Theme Chess Sets: General Review

The main purpose of owning a theme chess set is usually because the theme f the chess set connects personally to the owner. There are more kinds of theme chess sets available than one might imagine. There are several theme chess sets even of the same type. Lets take football theme chess sets for instance, you can usuallly any sports teams in theme chess sets. There are many, many different sports theme chess sets. What i'm really getting at is that theme chess sets aren't just for chess player's, although they are very fun to play chess with. Anyone that has a passion can find a theme chess set to suit their tastes, like I know several history buffs that really like the civil war theme chess set. Usually the Historic theme chess sets are accurate in dress and equipage. Detail is always a key feature in buying a theme chess set; since theme chess pieces are usually used for decorative purpose's. The more detailed and accurate the theme chess pieces, better it is.
Theme chess sets are very appealing, they add a touch of decorum to a room in a way that only chess can. And a theme chess set by the fireplace looks great! Theme chess pieces allow you to share your passion, whatever it is, with others.
They tend to create conversations on the topic of the theme chess set, the theme chess set is one of the greatest conversation pieces I have run across yet. Some theme chess sqets come with a chess box/board combo. And yet others have just the theme chess pieces, leaving you to purchase a chess board or box that suits you best. Or if you are more inclined to carpentry you could make your own chess board. I have written several articles on individual theme chess sets that I have had the pleasure to examine personally, all of the theme chess sets I have reviewed have been personally inspected by me. Thanks for reading!

Dragon Theme Chess Set

The Dragon Theme Chess Set is a fantastic mythical chess set. This Dragon theme chess set takes you back to the time of mages and dragons. Knights that fly on dragons backs and fairy tale castles are the silhouettes in the dragon theme chess set. Prepare to do battle with creatures of legend.
The pieces are very easy to distinguish for what they are. Some theme chess sets aren't all that easy to keep track of what each chess piece really is. No problems with the dragon theme chess set in that area. The extremely unique thing about this dragon theme chess set is that even though there is no real historic theme to this chess set, both sides of the theme chess pieces are designed unique. What I mean by that is, the knights on the blue side are designed completely different than that of the red side.

Just take a look at the picture, you will see what I mean, great detail don't you agree? The Dragon Theme Chess Set is an instant classic.

Marble Chess Set in Black & Green

First time I saw this green and black marble chess set, it got a big wow out of me. The marble chess board is especially impressive, the light that hits the board reflects impressively. And the quality of marble is quite good, the marble squares and border on the marble chess board has got a deep look to it that only marble can attain.
The marble chess pieces in this marble chess set are made in a classic, cut Staunton style. The Colors are Black and Green for the marble pieces as well as the marble board; making this marble chess very uniform in its colors and the matching colors complement each other very nicely.
Take a look at the picture of this marble chess set! it is simply beautiful, and it is even better looking in real life! Read more Statistics like weight and dimensions on this Marble Chess Set.

Chess History

The most conclusive evidence that can be pulled up today, points to India being the country that invented chess. Over the long years chess has gradually evolved little by little. One of the big changes to the game of chess, was when England became the biggest world power during the reign of Queen Victoria. The queen of the chess board went from being slightly better than a pawn, to the strength it is today, bishops could only move 2 spaces diagonally but they could also hop over other pieces. Castling was unheard of at first, and pawns weren't allowed the option to jump two squares for their first move.
Almost all the modern rules of chess were not finalized until about the 20th century. Even now chess is changing, there are may radical chess variants. The Most notable chess variants are Bug House, which is played with 4 player 2 chess boards and involves teams, (great practice for classical chess to) And 960 chess, also known as Fischer Random; the reason it is called 960 chess is because the back rank (with a few exceptions) are set up at random, and 960 different legal positions can be made. This completely destroys current opening theory, and really builds you strategy and tactics.

Cats and Dogs Theme Chess Set

This chess set has a great look and feel to it. The theme chess pieces are made of non-weighted synthetic resin. The designers of this cats and dogs theme chess set have gone extreme into detail with this theme chess set, a fantastic job indeed.

The Dogs:
The King on the Dogs side of the theme chess set is the Great Dane, the Great Dane is the biggest of the dog breeds. The great Dane is usually a large good tempered animal, just don't mess with the master! And in this case that would be the person using the dogs side of the theme chess set. The Queen of the dogs in the cats and dogs theme chess set is a pure white French Poodle. The Rooks are dog houses, the bishops are Saint Bernard's, the knights are Boxers and last but not least the pawns are aggressive looking German Sheppards.

The Cats:
I don't know much about cat breeds, so I will leave the identification of the cats to my readers, and I will Describe their attributes, fair enough? The king of the cats in the cats and dogs theme chess set is a stately looking tom cat of some sort. He sits poised, proud, with his crown on and very royal looking; like only a cat can. The Queen of the cat theme chess pieces looks to me like a persian cat. She to stands proudly, but with more grace than the king, like the king the queen also wears a crown. The bishops in the cat theme chess set are black cats... I do know what kind of cat the knights are, they are the sassy siamese cats, you can tell they are ready to bring the "cats rule and dogs drool" statement from Homeward Bound. Which by the way is a great movie for animal lovers and kids to watch. The rooks are raised cat beds. And the pawns are white kittens.

Take a look at the photo and see for yourself the detail put into these theme chess pieces. Also here is more statistical description of the Cats and Dogs Theme Chess Set.

Marble Cat Theme Chess Set

This marble cat theme chess set has great detail, and feels great. The marbelized cat theme chess pieces are one of a kind, the felines stand poised and ready for a dignified game of chess. Each theme chess piece in the marble cat theme chess set is distinctly marked, the king has a crown on his head and stands proudly with his head erect. The queen cat also holds a proud poise, but in a more gracefull way, both the king and the queen have goldden crowns on their heads, and the queen cat has a golden heart. If you are familiar with cats you will immediatly recognise the body language of the knight, the laid back ears of the knight chess piece gives the impression that the cat is in an aggressive pose. This aggressive pose that the knight has ensures that you will always be able to identify it as the knight every time. Besides the aggressive pose of the knight, there is also a licence on the knight kitty in the shape of a horse shoe. The bishop cat in this theme chess set is poised with arched back with a little golden bishop hat on his head. The Rook looks like a classic Staunton design, but with one differance. The gate entrance to the rook in this theme chess set, is actually a kitty door! And finally the pawn; the pawn in the cat theme chess set is, just like in regular Staunton style chess sets, is smaller than all the royal chess pieces behind them. The pawns are all little kittens with small golden caps.
Truely a good looking chess set, they are also fairly durable, with no super breakable protruding sculpting. You would not have a problem keeping this cat theme chess set nice looking, it would stay pretty much the same over time.

Take a look at the beautiful sculpting job on the Cat Theme Chess Set! It really is breathtaking, and it takes on extra meaning for cat lovers.

Giant Chess

Giant Chess sets are really popular with all age groups, really high class hotels and resorts are putting them on their grounds to attract people to stay at their unique vacationing spot. Of course that usually isn't the reason for staying at a resort, but it is definitely an incentive, and it the giant chess set looks fantastic.
Hotels and resorts aren't the only places you find Giant chess sets; I have seen them on people's backyard lawns and even at cafe's! The Rolly Toys Giant chess set is a universal crowd pleaser. The Rolly Toys giant chess set is very practical, it is the strongest giant chess set and it is by far the best quality giant chess set. The bases of the Rolly Toys giant chess set are hollow and they unscrew. That makes them easy to fill them up with sand or some other heavy substance. When weighted the Rolly Toys giant chess set becomes impossible for the wind to knock over, unless it is a hurricane you won't have to bother putting the Rolly Toys giant chess set under shelter during minor storms.
Even though most people choose to make their own unique giant chess board, Rolly Toys also has designed a giant chess mat. All 64 squares of the Rolly Toys giant chess mat snap together easily. The mat is designed like mesh, so when it rains the water just drains through the giant chess mat instead of puddling up. Both the giant chess mat and the giant chess pieces are extremely tough. In fact the Rolly Toys giant chess set is so tough it has not been matched for strength and durability.
