Review of Pocket Shredder for windows mobile users

Pocket Shredder is great for Windows Mobile users that want a great chess playing, and chess puzzle solving experience. On the Windows mobile playform, the chess experience is far superior to most dedicated chess handhelds, because it's simply software you install on your already powerful Windows phone.

Pocket Shredder is now also available for all mobile devices with Windows Mobile 5 or 6 and for Pocket PC 2003SE.

You can play against Pocket Shredder, analyse with it, solve chess puzzles and use the various training features. It offers the usual Shredder standard to go.

Installation took me barely 5 minutes to download and install. I downloaded the demo from the Shredder chess website . It will let you play for 3 days, and try out 10 of the 1000 chess puzzles.

I connected my phone to the computer with USB, and copied the single downloaded file to the devices main folder. Then I disconnected the device and ran the ".cab" file downloaded from the device. It installs and can then be run from the Start / Programs / Games folder. Very simple.

I wasn't sure what playing strength it would start out at, so I just played a game, and beat it the first time.

Shredder's rating or level of play became apparent when, after this game was completed, it said that it was playing at 1500 Elo and was adjusting itself to 1700 Elo. Sweet.

Next, I tried the training function, which has 1000 puzzles to solve.

It should me the last move that was played in the game, and who's move it is... in this case White's.

Make an incorrect move, and it will warn you. Make the correct move(s) and it will play along with you, and then tell you when you have solved it and go to the next problem.

You can get Daily Tactics or Search the Online Database for your current position. This helps you see which moves are the most popular, in how many games it occurred, and is especially great for you to play the openings!

I have really enjoyed this software, and I'll it on my Sprint HTC Touch running Windows Mobile 6.
