Silmans Complete Endgame Course

This is the best single book on the endgame you could buy, Jeremy Silman is probably my favorite author for beginner chess books, he is concise and has a good understanding of the way beginning chess players think, which is one of the keys to his very successful writing career.

Improving or learning chess with Chess DVDs

I am a visual learner, and I actually get more out of watching a chess DVD than reading a chess book. Chess DVDs also are great for people that learn best when being taught through hearing a teacher. Since chess coaches are expensive, and you cant re-wind them, I would rather get a chess DVD to teach me whatever it is that I want to learn.
Chess House has the biggest and best selection of Chess DVDs you can find online, and for a better price too! Chess House has a full range of chess DVDs of available, such as Chess Opening DVDs, Chess learning DVDs that teach you how to play the game of chess from the ground up, the Romans Lab, general instuctional chess DVDs, Chess House even sells some Chess Movies!

Kasparov Play The Queens Gambit

Kasparov is well qualified to teach the Queens Gambit, he used the Queens Gambit 19 times in his first match against Anatoly Karpov, and has received the best of training on how to use this powerful opening.

Kasparov does not just work through the variations one by one, fluent transitions make the chess students understand the ideas and see new connections. Even people who don't actually play this opening will benefit enormously from Kasparov's explanations, learning from this genius's vast knowledge of the game and his views on chess history.

More than three hours of first-class private tuition. This chess DVD can be played both on a PC and a DVD player, using your living-room TV set. It contains subtitles in English, German, Spanish, and Italian. The package includes the latest ChessBase 9.0 Reader, a big reference database featuring more than 100,000 Queen's Gambit games. Romans Lab DVD Series

Roman Dzinzi is the worlds acknowledged best chess theoretician; he really knows his stuff when it comes to chess. The Romans Lab DVD series is for those who really want to improve their chess game, if I really wanted to improve my chess game then I would buy the whole Romans Lab chess DVD series.
There is only one problem with the Romans Lab chess DVD series; Roman Dzinzi has a Russian accent, it isn't hard to understand him, but his accent can be befuddling for those with low comprehension levels. I never had that problem, but one of my acquaintances seemed to have a bee in his bonnet about that. You can buy the Romans Lab chess DVD series in a set of 28 chess DVD's. These chess DVD's have various subjects and topics, here is a list of the 28 DVD series titles.

Fritz and Chesster Chess Computer Software

Fritz and Chesster computer chess software is made and produced by ChessBase. Fritz and Chesster was designed with youngsters in mind; the idea is to teach your kids the game of chess in a fun, interactive way. There are two Fritz & Chesster programs produced by ChessBase: Fritz & Chesster Part 1 and Fritz & Chesster Part 2. ChessBase is probably coming out with a part Fritz and Chesster Part 3 soon as well.
Fritz and Chesster is meant only for younger minds, say about 5 to 10 years old. It teaches young kids how to play smart chess in very fun, amusing ways. I would highly recommend purchasing this chess software before/while sending your young child to a chess coach for chess training, it will make the lessons so much more understandable.

Computer Chess Software

If someone were to ask me what computer chess software I would recommend, I would answer them, "what level of chess do you play?" What level of chess you play now, and your current chess comprehension level will determine the answer to the question "What computer chess software would you recommend".

Computer Chess Software For Beginner's
For the adults and kids I would recommend the Tasc Chess CD II. The Tasc Chess computer software is the most direct and to the point chess leaning software I have seen yet! It is very basic, yet it gets the job done, by the time you finnish the program you will be out of the beginner chess player stage! Read More Statistics on Tasc II.

Chess Computer Software For Intermediate Players.
Usually when chess players get to the intermediate stage, they want to focus more on memorizing complex chess openings. Chess opening are important to the game of chess, but what is far more important is your general understanding of chess tactics. Chess tactics and theory is what will really win the day for you in a game of chess. And just as importand is your endgame, losing with a material advantage in the endgame always hurts. But there is a way to brush up on all three area's, chess opening's, tactics, and endgames. It's called Total Chess Training. Total Chess Training is computer chess software that hones all tree above mentioned chess skills. Total Chess Training is package of several chess programs, that was put together for the chess player or club player that is looking to improve his chess skills out of the intermediate stage. Read More Statistics On Total Chess Training.

Chess Computer Software For Intermediate and above!
Fritz 10 is a great live chess program that is produced by Chess Base. Fritz 10 is an interactive chess software that is really more fun than it is improving your chess skills. But that's not to say that it does nothing for you. If you use the tool that they give you with Fritz 10, you are bound to learn a lot. But what most people buy Fritz 10 for (and all the Fritz Software) is the online interactive part of chess. Owning Fritz 10 chess computer software unlocks a whole new chess world, you get your own profile to build online, and there are many Grandmasters that play using Fritz 10. Fritz 10 is used on PlayChess.com, the online chess gaming site for Chess Base. Read More Statistics On Fritz 10.

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is the dominate chess learning book, there is no question about it, more people have used the Bobby Fischer teaches chess book to learn the game of chess than any other book. It seems I always knew how to play chess, I learned to play before I can remember anything, But the first book I read that taught combinational play was Bobby Ficher teaches chess.

The Design Of Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess:

The format it is written in is entirely unique, it's written and printed in a style no other book in the world has been, I say that because half of Bobby Ficher teaches chess is upside down! There is a reason for that, Bobby Fischer teaches chess shows you how to play the game through practice problems, the book makes you learn by doing, and after you think you have the answer to the chess problem, the way Bobby Fischer teaches chess is made, you have to turn the page to see the answer, so there is no involintary cheating. And after you work your way through Bobby Fischer teaches chess right side up, you flip it over and go through it upside down!

The curious design of this chess book really is a great way to work a chess puzzle, you don't have to referance an index to get the answer to the problem, and the answer isn't on the same page as the chess problem so it keeps those people that can read upside down from cheating! And you can still work steadily page by page through Bobby Fischer teaches chess. It is the best design ever. Bobby Fischer teaches chess was published by Random House

The Content Of Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess:

First of all, Bobby Fischer doesn't take for granted you even know how to move a king! He starts you out in the beginning with the moves of each piece. After you learn the moves of each piece, you head from there to a guide (or forward) on how to use your edition of Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess to get the most effective learning results from it. And then comes the meat of the meal! How to go about checkamting the other guy from the first move to the last, you will learn how to deliver tough combinational checkmates and checkmate patterns, all the simple checkmates as well, how to stage massive assaults against the opposing enemy, and how to build inpenetrable defences.

A Word From Bobby Fischer, World Champion Chess Player:

"My book was written to help you play better chess. It can help you even if you don't know chess notation and only play casually now and then. It can help you if you are more experianced and have begun to play in tournaments. It can also help you if you don't know how to play at all."
"Programmed instruction, the method used in Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is a new concept in teaching chess. It has been used previously in industry and schools with exellent results. You can learn quickly and retain the material far better than with ordianry textbooks or lectures, even the beginner will remember what I teach him and be able to use it immediatly."

Official Rules Of Chess

Written by the US Chess Federation, with edits by Tim Just and Daniel Burg, The Official Rules Of Chess is the only book written on the official rules of chess that is sanctioned by the USCF. The official rules of chess explain every legal move on the chess board, and give you guidelines on how to organize, direct and run tournaments, the official rules of chess book also has details on a fast rating system that the USCF uses. The official rules of chess has guidelines for internet chess and speed chess, it features all the latest chess rules since 2003 and even some tips on winning chess and how to read chess notation. The official rules of chess was designed to be a reference and guidebook, not a training book, the official rules of chess is the only chess rules book that was actually authored by the USCF. The USCF is the governing non-profit organization that is the governing body in the United States, they are devoted to extending the role of chess in the US, their belief is that the American society can be made better through chess. Published by Random House the official rules of chess is paperback, 370 pages, the official rules of chess can be pretty heavy reading but very informative and wastes no time beating around the bush, the official rules of chess cuts right to the bone and gives you the facts. The official rules of chess is definitely the best guide for tournaments, and older people who can handle heavy reading, official rules of chess is definitely not a good book for kids.

If you are looking for a good book for kids to learn chess with, Chess Rules For Students by Bruce Bain is the best one available, it is very affordable, paperback, and very destructible (it will last as long as the learning period usually). Chess rules for students teaches chess notation, chess moves, and has helpful diagrams all in 55 pages. This book is a good chess learning guide, but does nothing to develop chess tactics or strategy, so Bruce Bain has published two other chess books, one is a chess workbook called Chess Tactics For Students, this chess book mainly teaches through chess diagrams with chess theory to back it up, it is made much better than the other two books and will last a long time it is 228 pages of workbook with 435 selected problems, a lot more book for your dollar, the other chess book is Checkmate Ideas For Students, this chess book also is full of diagrams to help young learners how to play the game, it is not nearly as long (it is 55 pages) or as extensive of training as chess tactics for students but gives you much of the same information, but doesn't drill the info home like chess tactics for students, like chess rules for students, chess tactics for students is very destructible.

Fischer Random Chess Variant Game

You may have heard of this chess variant invented by bobby fischer called Fischer Random. Fischer Random is a positively unique chess variant, the whole idea behind Fischer Random is to give the players more oppertunity to show their chess stratigey rather than theory. Here is a qoute from Bobby fischer, I don’t play chess anymore, I play Fischer Random. It is a much better game, more challenge. Chess is a dead game, it is played out. Fischer Random is a version of chess that I developed or invented, you could say, where you shuffle the back row of the pieces, not the pawns. Each side has an identical shuffle, so that everything is symmetrical, just like in the old chess. There are just a couple of rules: one rook has to be to the left of the king, one has to be to the right of the king, one bishop has to be on a light-colored square, and one on a dark-colored square. That’s basically it. You can learn the rules in two minutes. It’s a great game, and can become the standard of chess.” If you are interested, here are the Fischer Random Rules . The main goal for Fischer Random is to give the players every oppertunity to be creative rather than having memorized thousands of chess opening moves to fall back on, Fischer random completly anhilates all opening theory for the classic game of chess. Fischer Random is not nearly as populerized as classic chess and just as fun, the producers of this fairly new game are getting the word out about it and it is rumored that this game could be a huge hit. You can learn more about fischer random on this website, http://frcec.chess960.info/ there is a forum made for Fischer Random and all kinds of cool stuff, enjoy!

Xiangqi chess set: Chinese Chess Sets & Chinese Chess Boards & Pieces

Chinese Chess is captivating and enjoyable! Like traditional chess, Chinese chess is very mentally demanding taxing all the mind powers of both contestants. Chinese chess has quickly become accepted in the Western world, both by Asians and Americans. For those of you that have never played Chinese chess, the symbols on each piece quickly become familiar. Chinese chess sets can be obtained from a number of sources. Chinese shops commonly carry a cheaper variety of Chinese chess that has a paper board and wooden pieces, with the customary red and black inscriptions. There is a new generation of Chinese chess sets coming out that has brought together a selection of more desirable and durable Chinese chess sets.

Chinese Chess Sets
This Folding Travel Chinese Chess Set is great for mobility, it conveniently folds in half for storage or travel. Most folding chess sets have a clasp to keep them shut, this folding travel Chinese chess set has powerful intergrated magnets located near the corners on the underside of the board. The board is made of quality wood, the lines in it are actually carved into the board, not cheaply painted, the dimensions of this Chinese chess set are as follows: 12 1/2" x 3/4" x 12 1/2". The pieces that come with this Chinese chess set have the customary red and black symbols and have a substantial weight to them; they are crafted out of ground stone.

The Chinese Chess Set & Traditional Chess Set Package comes with the same ground stone pieces with black and red Chinese chess pieces. The Chinese chess board however can be flipped around revealing a traditional 64 square chess board; this package comes with the reversible Chinese chess board & classic chess board, Chinese chess set, and classic chess pieces. On a rateing of 1-5 i would rate the classic chess pieces at a 2, not all that great. but the chess board has algebraic notation on it and is really a great board, the squares and lines on the board are gold and the wood has a burgundy/red hue to it. Both sets of pieces come with a satin drawstring bag and rules on how to play.

For those of you who don't care to spend as much money on a game you may not have ever played, but would still like to get the game to learn it and enjoy it, the cheaper Chinese Chess Set is also available. This Chinese chess set comes with the heavy plastic Chinese chess pieces, a plastic case, and a thin paper foldable Chinese chess board. This Chinese chess set is obviously a cheaper version and really all you would get that will last is the pieces. It also comes with a set of rules

Chinese Chess History
History of Chinese Chess
Chinese chess, also known as Xiangqi, is a very popular game of the Orient. Tens of millions play this game in Thailand, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and other Asian countries. Xiangqi means "elephant game" and is pronounced "Shiang-Chi".

Playing Chinese Chess
Chinese chess rules have the Xiangqi board made up of ten horizontal lines and nine vertical lines. These are divided horizontally with a line called the "river". Two "palaces" are positioned in the center opposite sides of the Xiangqi board. Each is made by crossed lines connecting it's four "points".

Traditional chess is played on squares while Xiangqi chess pieces are played on intersecting lines called "points". The pieces consist of 2 Rooks (or chariots), 2 Knights (or horses), 2 Elephants (or bishops), 2 Mandarins (or advisors/assistants/guards), 1 King (or general), 2 Cannons, 5 Pawns (or soldiers).

Chinese Chess Rules

  • Red moves first
  • Win by checkmate or stalemate of the opponent's King
  • Perpetual check is not allowed and you cannot check your opponent more than three times consecutively with the same position on the board.
  • You can't force an enemy piece to move to and from the same two points endlessley in order for them to avoid capture. This rule avoids perpetual check type draws.
  • Game is drawn when checkmate or stalemate are impossible.

Beginner Chess Books, Through To Intermediate.

“What would be a good beginner chess book for my child to learn from?” This is a frequently heard question that many people ask. In this posting I will give you the recommendations of experienced Chess Coaches.

For the complete beginner Chess Rules for Students is the book most recommended by Teachers and Coaches all over the US. for Beginner chess players It puts the game in simple perspective, explaining the rules so that anyone can understand the game, doubly so if you have a chessboard set up as you go through it. To top it off it is very inexpensive.

The Chess Tactics For Students workbook is a great beginner chess book. If the intended recipient of the book already knows the rules but not so keen on tactics this beginner chess book is the way to go. It is made in a workbook style for beginners forcing you to think out pre-made chess problems.

More advanced books isolate different parts of the game (such as the opening or strategies), for a player wishing to advance in certain fields the Winning Chess Series, authored
by International Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan, is a great choice they cover the Openings, Endgames, Tactics,
Strategies and much more, 6 titles in all.

Chess For Anyone DVD

It is amazing how clear Bruce Warner makes learning chess. Anyone can learn to play chess and most people don’t know all the basics before they start to play, does that sound funny? Pitiful as it may sound I have seen and heard chess tutorials that miss many of the Basics that are covered by this DVD. In this DVD you start at the very beginning. You or your students will learn step by step, before you know it you (or your class) will be playing chess. This DVD is recommended by Grandmasters, Masters and Coaches all over the USA.
