Product Details

The Catalan is a sophisticated opening system which is popular at all levels of chess. In recent years it has been catapulted into the limelight by Vladimir Kramnik, who has revitalized it with many new ideas and has utilized it with great success against the world's strongest players - on occasion making it look like a forced win for White!
In this book, Grandmaster Nigel Davies presents a major study of this important opening. Using illustrative games and drawing upon his wealth of personal experience with the Catalan, Davies provides a reliable and dynamic repertoire for White, covers the main plans for both sides, and tackles crucial modern day issues such as move orders.

Reviews
  • Play the Catalan is full of useful practical advice For example Davies mentions the super fashionable 10.Bd2 (after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 Be7 5.Bg2 0-0 6.0-0 dxc4 7.Qc2 a6 8.Qxc4 b5 9.Qc2 Bb7) may be best theoretically but it is not really suitable for club players who have limited time to study. However playing over key games with 10.Bd2 can be very helpful for learning important plans in the Catalan that crop up in other variations. This book can be recommended for all Catalan players except those using it at master level and above who intend it to be their primary resource for learning sharp variations after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 dxc4. - John Donaldson: Chess Today
  • Overall, I find GM Davies' book to be very well written and very informative, providing the reader with an understanding of Catalan systems, as well as great depth, should the reader have the time and desire to delve deeper. - Harvey Lerman: Florida Chess
  • Davies has managed to present a comprehensive opening system in a concise way. - Schachwelt
  • I reckon this book would best serve players rated from 1700 to 2300, those rated below 1700 will have a hard time keeping up with the material and those rated above 2300 will need deeper coverage. Those in the aforementioned target group will richly benefit from studying the material in this well-written book. - Carsten Hansen: ChessCafe.com
