IMPORTANT: We have noted a few minor design issues, which have been submitted to the manufacturer:

  1. The unit's factory default language is German. When the unit is reset (from loss of power or from pressing the reset button) it will default back to German. This is fixed simply by pressing the reset button, then the Right Arrow and the Green ENT button.
  2. MOST, but not ALL pieces will fit in the storage compartment below the unit.
  3. Contrast adjustment settings do not appear to function correctly and in most cases do nothing at all for the display. In the units that we tested, all displays already were in the most optimal contrast setting.

Just what we were looking for

Perfect to learn on or for a real challenge, the computer offers a wide selection of challenges to players on any level. The whole family s enjoying the chess set. Small enough to travel with but large and weighty enough for large hands. Will take a bit of practice to get quick with the computer commands but with regular play it will happen in a few days. Really great choice!!!

Great chess computer

I really like the Genius Pro. It’s my first chess computer and it is getting me back into chess. Being able to match wits against the computer while moving and seeing real pieces is much better than an iPad chess game. So far it’s working fine without a hitch!

Big brain in the shell of a toy

I've had the Chess Genius PRO for about 2 weeks now. I probably would have been happy with the Chess Genius Amateur - if there was such a thing. I have a 700 chess.com rating, so that should answer any question about why the Pro beats me every time I play it. There are options for having the device make mistakes so I have at least a chance, but both the Pro and me would know the truth. So I don't do that. Instead I look to learn from all my errors.

I am completely satisfied with its ability to humiliate me in each game. It helps me maintain my humbleness while reminding me that I really do need to look for attacks and blunders before I move, not after.

Because I cannot critique its brain, I'll use my diminishing human privilege and complain that the device has the plastic feel of a model airplane. I want something as intellectually oppressive as this to feel much more solid than a child's toy. I also want it to be bigger and heavier. If I'm going to continuously be destroyed while I'm learning, I would like it to feel more solid than a bag of chips. My biggest gripe is the chess pieces. They have an ersatz "chrome" finish. I do not play in the dark so each of the pieces reflects whatever light I have in the room. It's disconcerting. It's probably the main reason I'm losing every game.

I have enjoyed playing with this computer even though I have not won a game. I have played a few games where I made the computer work hard.

It is a good computer for players much better than I, ones with a much higher rating than I.

I would like to know what the default settings are.

I can use the German language setting; I have not tried the Russian language yet though.

so far so good --- I need to play a couple of games to give a final opinion
