The rosewood Alban chess pieces are the most beautifully made and finished wood pieces I have seen. I have looked at sets costing three times as much and they aren’t any better than this set. The rosewood is dark and polished to perfection. The weight and finish make them very enjoyable to play with. I recommend playing them on a board with 2 ¼ squares.

Recently purchased a handmade board from an antique shop with two inch squares and wanted a larger set to go with it. It took me a surprisingly long time to find a set that I considered an upgrade in quality to the one I had and that also did not break the bank. I ordered the Alban rosewood set and crossed my fingers.
It arrived quickly and when unwrapping the set my first reaction was that the pawns were a touch too small. Once all set up the set looks proportional and the contrast of the light and dark chessmen is high. The set looks beautiful on its own and looks great on the chessboard I purchased it for.
