Product Details
South Dakota is rich in native history where resident artist Terry dived deep into the cultural history of not only the Sioux but many other Indian peoples in North America. He brings a rich heritage to life through celebrated figures of folklore and recondite cultural symbols. The Dakota chess set interprets the beautiful Native American culture in the extraordinary game of chess.
While visiting a friend, Terry observed a collection of chess sets and asked his friend how to play. As he learned, he realized how great a game he had discovered.
Terry happened on the idea to sculpt chessmen from epochal native history. When he returned home, Terry started sculpting a couple of pieces. Then it occurred to him, how should they really look?
He then embarked on a journey to learn everything he could about the culture from books, talking to the people, witnessing their dress, dance and song at a Pow Wow, also checking out native artist's work including bead work, traditional music instruments and seeing pipes being craved from pipe stone.
Terry researched various symbols from many different tribes. These symbols are included in the perimeter of the board and arranged to tell a story.
This exact model is limited to 10 sets, and would be an extraordinary piece for a museum, information center, bed and breakfast, or residence.
