Product Details

The Benko Gambit is undoubtedly one of Black's most dynamic openings. In return for his pawn investment Black gains long-term pressure, which is often so powerful it continues right through into the endgame. White must decide whether to grab the pawn and try to hold on, or to choose a more aggressive approach. Either way, Black generally succeeds in his aim of unbalancing the position from a very early stage. In this book, Nicolai V. Pedersen presents a concise and practical repertoire for Black within the Benko Gambit. Using illustrative games, he examines the critical main lines of the gambit, the tricky sidelines and also explains how to meet the various options White has of avoiding the Benko. Studying this book will allow you to play the Benko Gambit with confidence in your own games.

Reviews
  • I am very impressed by this book. With the choices of lines recommended for Black, and with the amount of work Pedersen has put into the volume. After studying the material and the lines recommended by Pedersen, I am ready to reinstate the Benko to my repertoire. For players rated 1700-1800, the introduction details typical ideas and indicates which of the main games employs these ideas, and the annotations allow one to follow the narrative without too much trouble. For even very strong players, the analysis the lines makes the material worthy of study. I highly recommend this book to all levels of Benko Gambit devotees ***** (out of 6) Carsten Hansen ChessCafe.com
  • It's a good guide to the current state of play in the Benko Gambit and it achieves its aim; club and tournament players will definitely be able to use the recommendations here as a repertoire against 1 d4/2c4. Sean Marsh marshtowers.blogspot.com
  • One stop shopping for those interested in an up to date answer to 1.d4. While PLAY THE BENKO GAMBIT covers all the existing theory, it is also user friendly with plenty of explanatory prose and tips to enable the first timer to get a quick handle on this opening. Plays from 1800 to 2400 will benefit from it. Jeremy Silman Jeremysilman.com
