History of Chess Sets

Ever wanted to know about the origins of chess sets? There is a great book on the subject by Dr. Isaac Linder. He is well known owing to his numerous works on the history of chess. His book, Art of Chess Pieces, traces the origins of the game of chess and photographically captures the chess set design changes through the centuries. The variety of chess sets and pieces that exist are simply amazing. The western world is most familiar with the Staunton chess set design. Originating in the 1800's in England, the Staunton chess set is the pattern for most traditional modern day chess sets. The Staunton chess pieces are so accepted today that chess tournaments and all levels of organized club play require this style.
