Can you play a game without a human opponent?
Must it be connected to a computer? If so, how are you told where to move the "opponent's" pieces? I am looking for a quality electronic chess set that is self-contained. Preferably, one that does not require a computer hookup. And, ideally, one that indicates the opponents moves on the board, rather than on a separate screen.

What you're looking for really describes the DGT Centaur or Millennium Exclusive. Both do not require a computer and display moves on the board. The DGT Chessboard on this page does require either A) PC connection with software that shows or even voice announces moves and all the rich features available with software or B) the DGT Pi which is a combination computer/clock that sits next to this board effectively making it a chess computer without a PC, plus all that the Pi offers. Many people wonder why the DGT board doesn't have built in logic and cannot play as a computer. They key reason is that it's main use is a move recording and interface device that is used in actual tournaments all the way to the world championship level. Any computing built into the device wouldn't be allowed. Instead it transmits moves to wherever they need to go. Similar reasoning goes into the lack of led lights or on board display. These would be distracting during events. This travel chess is designed for quality and enjoyable play.
