The PRO pieces have magnets in the bottom that allow the board to detect the piece. You would be able to use a different set of pieces as long as they have magnets. It may be possible to use just a metallic sticker like some have used with the DGT Centaur, but being that the PRO is so new, no one has confirmed this to be the case yet. This chess set is designed for quality and enjoyable play.
