Answer: You can find the manual in the product description which may help to answer your questions. There are opening libraries that you can select that have openings from which the computer selects. If you deviate ouside the openings moves and main variants, the computer will switch to its analysis based move calculation.
You can start from a set up position and moves can be taken back to a previous position. This electronic chess computer is designed for quality and enjoyable play.

Time Control 1 with 40 moves in 90 minutes for example
Time Control 2 60 minutes

Keep in mind that the display is at the front of the machine (White player side) only so that if there is a two player environment only one player has the benefit of seeing the numbers easily. This is different from the Exclusive devices that half the module off to the side like a chess clock.

Answer: James, the King Competition has a pressure sensitive board so, yes, you can use your own pieces. I checked with someone here and the thing they warned against was if the pieces were too heavy they might trigger the pressure board on their own. This chess board is designed for quality and enjoyable play.
