what holds the pieces to the board? Is the board or are the pieces magnetic?
I can imagine that a leather board might not lie completely flat, or that there might not be a lot of friction between the bottom of the pieces and the board itself.

The chess set needs to be set on a flat hard surface. The size overall is what makes it portable however I would not attempt to move the chess board while the pieces are set up. The pieces are made of metal and therefore are heavily weighted. The pieces get their stability because of their heavy weight relative to their size.
