Great question! The Flex Pad is constructed with a fabric (cloth) top and a rubber backing — not solid rubber throughout. It's digitally printed on the cloth surface with an anti-slip rubber base, similar to a mousepad. That combination is what lets it lay perfectly flat, fold or roll up for storage, and hold up well over time. The playing surface is smooth, so it works great with felt-bottom pieces.
