Product Details

This chessboard offers a larger square size at 2.25" and narrower perimeter. As a result both Players models have the same overall dimension of 21".

Players, admirers, and those who enjoy well-made products will appreciate the workmanship of this chess board that is ready to pair with a variety of suitably sized chess pieces. All Heirloom Collection Chess Sets are built on this board.

The chessboard is handcrafted in Pennsylvania from locally sourced premium walnut and maple woods. The process of creating the boards takes many months, from the drying and curing of woods, to the special cutting and assembly process, to the final details that include grooves, beveled edge, engraving, and the multiple finishes that gives it the trademark luxurious and distinguishably smooth surface. Over many months, Raphael created this chessboard model inspired by Drueke's obsolete works. It has become a remarkable showpiece and platform for any set of chess pieces one owns that are suitably sized, usually 3 3/4" tall on average.

The work of creating this chessboard is entrusted to a Pennsylvania family with a rich heritage of woodworking and farming passed down through five generations, and originating in Switzerland. The lost art of woodworking is continually refined, blending timeless methods with the latest knowledge on living wood behavior.

The creator of this chessboard has studied wood movement extensively. Wood is "living" after it is cut down, not a rigid block. Due to the circular ringed nature of a tree, the direction of cuts is very important to the natural expansion and contraction of the wood as humidity levels change from one environment to another. This unique expansion of both woods used in this work of art, require great attention in every phase.

Size: 21" square chess board with 2.25" squares, 3/4" thickness, it's ideally suited to standard 3 3/4" to 4.25" tall chess men.

Care: It can be helpful to store or display the chessboard vertically so that equal temperature and humidity is applied to both upper and lower sides of the wood. A light lacquer finish is applied for furniture style smoothness, and a soft, dry cloth should be used to wipe the surface dust free.

Worthy successor to Drueke

I have a Drueke board with 2 inch squares that I bought 27 years ago. It has been shown with pride in my living room since I got it. But recently I purchased a larger set of boxwood and ebony pieces and they were crowded on the 2 inch squares I bought the JLP board with 2.25 inch squares to accommodate them.
I am very happy to report the the JLP board is every bit as nice. The fit and finish is flawless and the grain pattern in the squares is perfectly matched. They must have had to sort through hundreds, is not thousands of pieces of wood to find 64 pieces that matched so well. Could not be happier. On top of quality of the board shipping was very quick and board arrived 2 days ahead of promised date.

Elegant, solid board

The 2.25” square JLP is a beautiful piece that is rock solid and makes for a great display board. It pairs beautifully with the 4” Executive ebonized set offered by Chess House and shown in the pictures I’ve included. The underneath side of the board showed more grain in the wood to the extent that it is not as attractive/playable, but I would not list it as a deal breaker. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase and the awesome customer service the staff at Chess House provided during my recent purchases. I would recommend JLP boards to anyone wanting a quality product.

Beautiful board, great service

As I was looking to upgrade my chess set, I ended up buying the 21" Hardwood Player's Chessboard with 2.25" Squares JLP, USA. I selected this board because I like the simple but elegant style (Walnut and Maple, and these borders), and because I was looking for a massive hardwood chess board (my own veneer board, to which I am attached because my dad taught me to play chess on it, was unfortunately peeling off).

I am very happy with my purchase. The board is beautiful--the surface is matte (easy on the eyes), the squares are well-aligned, and the finishing looks perfect to me. And it's awesomely massive (heavy). I also liked that I was able to pay the Import Duty and VAT up-front, during check-out, during shipping selection. This way I knew exactly how much the board was going to cost me, so I wouldn't be surprised by a higher-than-expect FedEx invoice some weeks after my purchase (which has been known to happen when ordering abroad--in fact importing goods into the country).

Unfortunately, there was some damage on the side of the board, most likely caused during shipping. I didn't want to ship it back half-way across the globe, so Chess House made me a very generous discount offer. Then, on my request, Chess House arranged for me with FedEx a refund on the Import Duty and VAT (due to the lower value of the imported goods). All in all, I felt Chess House took good care of me--they were extremely polite, professional, patient, and generous. If I lived in the USA, I would definitely return to Chess House for future purchases.

P.S. For reference for future buyers, the pictures show the board with a 3.5" Staunton Europe chess set (not included).

An End Game Piece

This is one of the most elegant piece of woodwork I have put my hands on. It totally exceeded my expectations when I oppened the box. The wood grain is exquisite and although there are some grain holes on it, for me, it only adds character to the board.
Looking into the non-playing (bottom) side, I feel like its smoother than the top tho and as the previous review said, it has that sort of bubbles on the finish. But, all of these imperfections does not change my overall impression that this is a top tier masterpiece of a chessboard. Check my YT unbox vid with related title for more. Thank you Chesshouse/JLP.
