King Competition highly recommended

The King Competition was promptly shipped by Chesshouse to Australia and it was well packaged, no issues. I had also purchased the ChessVolt battery which is a nice unit with led levels and on/off switch. It was a toss between The King Competition and the DGT Centaur, and I made the right choice. The King Competition shines with its amount of level variety, playing styles and playing options to choose from. There is a save games feature and can export games to a PC. Greats news is that its even good for absolute beginners as well as advanced players. The board is well designed and constructed, a good size, feels robust with good choice of plastics and it's easy to slip your fingers under the edge and move the board. I like the symmetrical design with the good size boarder, it makes it very easy to grab. The buttons have a nice action and the display is clear and accessing the variety of features is straightforward. The pieces feel good and are nicely finished and designed. The supplied manual is more like a quick start guide with the full manual available for download, as it can change when the software is updated. I thoroughly recommend the King Competition for the enjoyment and challenge of playing chess due to its chess program, its variety of options and playing styles and design. Very happy with the King Competition.

Now to my gripes.
1. Since the pieces are black, I wish the black squares were slightly off-black to have allow for better contrast or maybe the black pieces less black. The white pieces are a lovely off-white colour.
2. When the unit is switched off via the buttons, it saves its current game automatically, good, however, if the power/battery cord is accidentally unplugged the game is lost. It should have a constant auto-save feature to counter this. Note: It does have 9 slots for games saves.

Future models.
1. I would like to see better display technology employed, after all it is 2023. Hopefully in their next revision they will.
2. I also would like to see an auto-sensing board. This one has a pressure sensitive board which does have its own advantages, and after all it does work good.

Strongly Recommend

Solid build. Pieces nicely weighted, board a good size.

Computer offers a great range of playing strengths. Beginner son in law was able to play a challenging game without getting crushed. As a low to intermediate player, I can play challenging opponents. Good balance between not letting me get away with blunders but not dominating and discouraging me.

Strongly recommend as a first computer for beginners or intermediate players. Can’t comment on advanced play as I am not there yet.

Strongly recommended purchase

I had thought about buying the Millennium King Performance for months but then at the time of purchase, I saw that the Millennium King Competition was also for sale.
The price is lower and the material is plastic but the functions of the chessboard are exactly the same.
Upon its arrival, I was amazed at the quality and elegance of the chessboard, much more beautiful than it appeared online.
I haven't had any problems so far and the chess engine is really strong and suitable for every level of player.

Chesshouse shipped the chessboard in no time and the service was excellent.

I recommend the chessboard to all those who don't care about the material of the chessboard and who want to buy an excellent quality product.

King Competition

I am very satisfied with it's strength, however, it seems so much larger than I imagined. It takes up the full width of our kitchen table. Unless you plan to leave it somewhere, it will be a hassle to set up and put away. The picture makes it look half the size.

The more affordable verison of the King Performance. Great deal!!!

Between this and my DGT Centaur, DGT Pi, Excalibur Igor and Saitek Chess Calculator, this has become my favorite. I play a couple of games before bed every night on the King Competition and I love the experience. It looks elegant. The pieces are perfectly weighted. The fun levels feel like I'm playing a human. The display and square indicator lights are well implemented with a user-friendly menu system. The only slight criticism I have is that I wish the 'press down the piece to move' system
was a little more sensitve like my Igor which is perfect. This is not a deal-breaker by any means as it quickly becomes a non-issue after a few games and you just naturally adjust to the pressure required. The PowerVolt rechargeable battery and Chess Link options (sold separately) make this a fantastic chess companion. I'm very impressed with the number of games I'm able to play on a single charge with the PowerVolt accessory. You may think I'm an idiot for liking this over my DGT smartboard + DGT Pi. I love those, but the King Competition is more compact and light, that's all. The main reason I wanted this board is because I loved the Chessmaster series back in the day and this AI uses the same "King" chess engine in a more convenient and physical laptop needed. At first, I had my eye on the beautiful wooden look of the King Performance. But, when this became available at a much lower price, I thought I'd sacrifice the 'better-looks' for affordability, but, after playing on the Competition, I find myself admiring its beauty. It really is nice-looking when you meet it in person. I also love working with Chesshouse. They always make me feel like I'm being well-taken care of as a customer! :)
