This handsome and well-crafted box is the perfect companion to my Druke maple & walnut chessboard. My chessmen are always displayed ready for play on that board. I use the new box strictly to keep extra pieces for pawn retrieval. I never need a salt shaker to represent a Queen.
On top of the box, in each color, are five Queens, one Bishop, one Knight, and a Rook. Each is an identical match to my father’s old chess set. At age four, I learned how to play chess using it.
More pieces fill the box inside but it’s most unlikely the box will ever be opened to need one. I like keeping pieces for pawn retrieval on top of the box because they are handy and physically separated from chessmen captured in play. Players can glance at pieces captured and not be confused by seeing extra chessmen.
The additional pieces for pawn retrieval look formidable and stunning atop the box.
This box is unique and makes a remarkable impression. I am delighted.
