The Craft
John has a rich woodworking heritage in the state of Pennsylvania. Originally from Switzerland, the skills were passed down through five generations. This lost art of woodworking is continually refined, blending timeless methods with the latest knowledge of wood behavior. For example every design must be carefully planned with the appropriate wood selection and cuts to account for variations in humidity that cause natural expansion and contraction of wood. To craft a wood product that will last for generations, John gives great attention to every phase of production including wood selection, drying, cutting, curing, crafting, and the multi-step finishing process that results in the smooth, elegant, lustrous finish for which the JLP products are known. Every product is personally overseen by John and must meet his standards before releasing them to Chess House.

Heirloom Chess Set

I had ordered an Heirloom Chess Set with the Wenge/Maple board and the ebonized Grandmaster pieces. It took awhile to get here because I ordered right before Xmas and bad weather! It came today and I could not be more pleased. The quality of the board and pieces are superb and it looks better on my table than in the pictures! Absolutely stunning. Paul was wonderful to deal...exceptional service.

Beautiful board!

I just recieved my 21 inch Wenge and Maple chess board and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The quality of the construction is exceptional. The color of the wenge is beautiful, like a dark espresso. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a very high quality board.

Beautiful board and pieces! High quality workmanship and good value. Great communication, quick delivery, etc. although it was delivered to the wrong house (similar number down the street). This is not on Chess House though. Strangely though, the pieces were delivered short one black pawn. Likely an anomaly and upon notification Chess House fixed it right away. These things happen but hopefully not regularly. I will shop here again.
