I don't understand why it's so difficult to buy unfinished pieces online. These pieces are great, I've already gone through 7 sets building boards for friends and family, and I need more, but they're out of stock. Grr.
I've stained these pieces 5 or 6 different colors, including traditional tints along with blue, red, and white, and I've left some raw and just polyurethaned them. I haven't used any of the felt or weights, because I just didn't see the need.
Hoping Chesshouse gets more soon.
Some issues with a few of the pieces but all in all they are of good quality. Liked that they were made of Hornbeam. Didn’t use the felt that came with because it didn’t match the board I made with them. Already in correspondence to get some replacement pieces and extremely happy with it. Recommend using danish oil to finish them! Will purchase again for my next handmade chess set.
The paintable pieces were generally what I expected. It included weights and felt to add to the bottom of the pieces. The pieces needed a bit of sanding because some of them were a bit rough. In addition, some of the weights were difficult to get into the bases of the pieces. It took a great deal of pressure and some adjustment to the holes in the bottom of the pieces. That said, I'd recommend these if you'd like to create a fun heirloom project. I paired mine with a board on which I painted a chess board and medieval style depictions of the white and blue kings. I decorated the box, stained its interior lid, and added felt for a lining. See attached photos.
The chess set is great. The wait (4months) not great.
